Mission Statement:
PAWS seeks to facilitate and assist in maintaining a safe and friendly environment for all members of the Granite Bay High School community.

General Guidelines:
PAWS volunteers will function within the established district, administrative, and community framework, maintaining flexibility to meet changing needs and conditions.  It will assist in reducing safety-related distractions which detract from a high quality education for all students as mandated by the community.

General Activity:
PAWS volunteers will be on campus before school, during lunch periods and after school, walking about and talking with the GBHS community.

PAWS Volunteer Roll:
Your visible presence and interaction will promote a peaceful and positive atmosphere on campus.  Students and faculty have been given information about and participate in the role of PAWS.  These groups are very supportive and grateful for our presence and commitment.
  • Be positive.  Be friendly. Talk with the students and faculty.
  • Keep moving.  You are free to roam the entire campus.
  • Be helpful.  You may have the opportunity to assist the administration or faculty.  They will be very appreciative of your assistance.
As a PAWS volunteer you have a passive role:
  • Don't break up fights.  Call for help instead
  • Don't apprehend or stop anybody.  It's not your purpose.
  • Don't attempt to seize drugs or weapons.  Pass the information on to the administration.
Attitude - Your best ally for success:

Relax, Be positive.  It is not your role or purpose to correct student conduct or impose moral, ethical, or personal values.  Your presence alone will deter most negative conduct.

Resist the temptation to give "corrective advise."

Remember your SMILE.

If you see something positive happening, reinforce it with a compliment.

If you have the opportunity to lend a helping hand, do so.  You are setting an example.

What to Expect:

When the doors open for the first lunch period GBHS comes to life. A small city of young adults suddenly appears from various directions.  Each student is a teenager struggling with the influence of peer acceptance, needs for individuality, and a desire (for the most part) to get lunch over with in order to spend free moments with their friends.  Each student comes from a different home environment.  Their attitudes differ regarding the importance of respect for established school rules and their perception of authority.

Some students walk about individually, others in groups.  Some sit together or stand together in one place for the entire lunch period.  Some students are attempting to get to another lunch time activity and some are simply trying to relax between classes.

Granite Bay High School is an energized but peaceful campus...our future leaders feeling their way.

F.Y.I.:
  • High school students can be loud.
  • Students may act differently at school than at home.  Their roll is defined at home.  It is changeable at school.
  • Pushing or "play acting" does not necessarily mean a conflict is imminent.
  • Fights are very rare, typically two individuals are involved (don't rule out the ladies).
  • You may see clothing you don't approve of, or hear language you don't like. The school administration will be happy to talk with you about any concerns you have.
  • You may see littering, though GBHS students have taken an active self-monitoring role in this area.
