A Pioneer passes away. On Saturday last Mrs. 2 CONC Charlotte Kennedy breathed her last at her home 2 1/2 miles east of 2 CONC Carrollton. At the age of 16 she came with her father, mother and 2 CONT 2 CONT family to Dallas County in 1855 . She had lived in the same community 2 CONC for the past 60 yeas and was all these years a member of the Methodist 2 CONC church, her father, Mr. George D. Drake, and husband James Kennedy, 2 CONC being the founders of the old Webb's Chapel. She was the mother of 2 CONC nine children, six of whom survive her, and partially raised three 2 CONC orphans, 2 CONT 2 CONT and lived to see fourteen grand and seven great-grand children, a 2 CONC privilege vouchsafed to but few. This good woman belonged to that 2 CONC class, now rapidly disappearing, who made the sacrifices and braved 2 CONC the dangers and underwent the trials which gave this land to the 2 CONC present generation. In her girlhood the country had not a respectable 2 CONC school or church building measured by present day standards. The red 2 CONC man was abroad seeking the white man's blood, and the beasts of pray 2 CONC were in the land. Neighbors were few and far between. Inconveniences 2 CONC were not lacking. But loving hearts and courageous spirits abounded. 2 CONC The girl could take her gun and stand in the door and bid defiance to 2 CONC the marauding band, and men could plow and hoe and chop with the six 2 CONC shooter strapped to their side and "old betsy" hard by, ready for toil 2 CONC or danger. The people of today, speeding in coaches and car over pike 2 CONC and macadam, are thoughtless as to those who made such conditions 2 CONC possible for them. And to that the noble class Sister Kennedy 2 CONC belonged. Her days on earth are past and her words uttered to me a day 2 CONC before her death justified the statement that "She rests well now." 2 CONC For she said "I love to live, but I am ready to die; I have made peace 2 CONC with God." 2 CONT 2 CONT Her sufferings preceding death were severe and protracted, but she 2 CONC bore it all patiently. Her funeral was conducted by the writer and was 2 CONC largely attended. The floral offerings were both numerous and 2 CONC beautiful. Soft be thy bed and peaceful be thy slumber, dear old 2 CONC pioneer. And may thy awakening be glorious. D.F . She was raised by her older sisters and brothers. Her 2 CONC only memory of her mother was when she was lifted her up to "kiss her 2 CONC mother goodbye" in the casket. As a result she would never let any of 2 CONC her children or grandchildren go to a funeral. She became a teacher 2 CONC whe n she finished school and taught school in and around the 2 CONC Carrollton, Texas area. It was the custom for the teacher to stay at 2 CONC the various homes of her pupils. She met Marsh at a Camp 2 CONT 2 CONT Meeting. A napkin found in her possessions has a notation "The most 2 CONC wonderful weekend of my life." She and Marsh were married February 22, 2 CONC 1902 and lived with his widowed mother, Charlotte Kennedy, until the 2 CONC family moved to Ft . Worth in 1914. One of her 2 CONC sister-in-lawsremembered that she loved to read so much that she even 2 CONC read while she was doing the dishes. She taught both her oldest 2 CONC children at home until the move to Ft. Worth. A letter to Ruth and 2 CONC James from their grandmother Charlotte Kennedy told them how lucky 2 CONC they were to be able to go to school. She was a very religiou s person 2 CONC and read her bible daily. She taught Sunday School and Bible School 2 CONC and was a member of the Ladies Society of the First Congregational 2 CONC Church. When they finally moved into their own home on May St. in Ft. 2 CONC Worth, they fit right in to the neighborhood. There was a little 2 CONC family owned store on the corner and the neighborhood children were 2 CONC the same ages. Ruth met her future husbandWade Marrs, whose family the 2 CONC Proccers, lived across the street. The family walked to church and 2 CONC sometimes downtown as well. Her hair was originally very dark brown, 2 CONC but turned gray before she was 30 years old. She was about 5'5" tall 2 CONC with beautiful purple eyes, hence her nickname "Pansy". When her older 2 CONC sister, May Choice, was ill and dying in 1948 she stayed with her and 2 CONC at that time found that she had originally been named Jeannie after 2 CONC her father's sister. She had thought it was Jennie which she didn't 2 CONC like. She had changed her name Kathleen and this is how she was known. 2 CONC Her grandchildren dubbed her "Katie" and that stuck. She worked at the 2 CONC polls at every election counting votes. She never got over the death 2 CONC of her youngest child Baby Jack. She saved one of his little toys for 2 CONC years. She and Marsh raised her oldest granddaughter Barbara from the 2 CONC time she was 2 years old. Katie attended every PTA meeting and 2 CONC assisted her in her studies. She took her to church and Sunday School 2 CONC and took care of her until Barbara was about 10 years old when Barbara 2 CONC moved to Grand Prairie with her mother, father and youngest sister. 2 CONC About 2 years before Marsh died, he converted the house into two 2 CONC apartments and built a garage apartment in 2 CONT 2 CONT the back of the house intending this to be some income when he 2 CONC retired. Unfortunately he didn't live to enjoy retirement. Katie 2 CONC visited his grave at Greenwood Cemetery every week. Being left a 2 CONC widow, Kathleen was able to support h erself with the rent from these 2 CONC apartments. In 1949 her sister, Juanita's (Jonnie) husband, Charles 2 CONC Bennett died so 2 CONT 2 CONT she asked her sister to move in with her. They lived together until 2 CONC 1959 when being unable to care for herself or her sister, she went to 2 CONC live with her oldest daughter Ruth in Olympia, Washington. She didn't chew 2 CONC gum because herfather had paid her a dollar not to chew gum for a year 2 CONC and she never cared for it after that. She used to tell of squeezing 2 CONC the juice out of the watermelon to use as "medicine" for her dolls. 2 CONC She told of when she was a child, and made paper dolls out of figures 2 CONC in the catalog. Instead of changing the clothes which weren't 2 CONC available at that time, she cut out different dolls for each change of 2 CONC clothing so the clean shaven man in his pajamas might have a beard in 2 CONC his work clothes. etc. When they became old and flimsy she said she 2 CONC would "color them purple and green and throw them in the fireplace". 2 CONC She knew many rhymes and stories which she used to tell her enthralled 2 CONC grandchildrenand was never too busy to sit down and read a story. She 2 CONC could do any math problem in her head, quote scripture, sing a song or 2 CONC spell any word. She had a low melodious voice and sang while she hung 2 CONC out washing on the clothes line. One of her favorite hymns was "His 2 CONC Eye is On The Sparrow". As she got older senile dementia set in and 2 CONC her short term memory was very poor. Greer published his reference, Early Virginia 2 CONC Immigrants, 1623-1666. In that work, Greer wrote that John Coffee came 2 CONC to Virginia in 1637 as the indentured servant of one Nicholas Hill. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1969, Nell M. Nugent, in her work, Cavaliers and Pioneers, 2 CONC Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Vols. I-I II, 2 CONC transcribed the same information, but recorded the name as John Coffin 2 CONC or John Scoffin. 2 CONT 2 CONT Marvin Coffey, in his work of 1984, James Bluford Coffey, His 2 CONC Ancestors and Descendants in America, wrote that he went to the 2 CONC original records, and found that Nugent had copied the name correctly; 2 CONC e.g., Coffin in one place, and what a ppears to be Scoffin in another. 2 CONC Marvin observed that whatever the name, it is not Coffee or Coffey! 2 CONT 2 CONT Many Coffee/Coffey genealogists have accepted that John found in 2 CONC Greer's work was the earliest Coffee in America. Some researchers have 2 CONC given him a wife, often two wives; either Mary Jolliffe or Rebecca 2 CONC Ireland. 2 CONT 2 CONT Records found, in York Co., VA, mention a William Ireland , in that 2 CONC county from 1633-1648. And, there is a John Jolliffee in Nansemone and 2 CONC Isle of Wight counties in 1653 (see Nugent). But, after all of the 2 CONC research, by literally hundreds of Coffee/Coffey researchers over 2 CONC several decades, no one has related any credible evidence that 1) 2 CONC there was a John Coffee/Coffey in that time frame, and 2) that a Mary 2 CONC Jolliffee or Rebecca Ireland ever existed. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward is first found mentioned in the 1699 will of William Mosely. 2 CONC The will was proved in Essex Co., VA on April 16 , 1700, and in 2 CONC September, 1700 Edward received his "freedom , corn, and clothes" from 2 CONC the Mosely estate. Mosley transported many indentured persons to 2 CONC Virginia from about 1660 until the 1690's. Edward was likely one of 2 CONC his servants. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward Coffee/Coffey remains as our earliest known ancestor in 2 CONC America. 2 CONT 2 CONT Prior to his death, Dr. Marvin Coffey revisited the Edward Coffey/Mary 2 CONC Jolliffee question at my request (jkcoffee) . He followed up with the 2 CONC this information: 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Peter Rigllesworth had a will in which he mentions a daughter Mary. It 2 CONC has been said that this Mary married John Jolliffe but I have seen no 2 CONC record to substantiate it. John Jolliffe appears in the deed records 2 CONC of Nansemond and Isle of Wight cos., VA in 1653 and in Lower Norfolk 2 CONC co. in 1661, the latter being just a renewal of the patent of 1653. I 2 CONC have not yet seen a list of John's children or that he had a dau. 2 CONC named Mary, but I think it likely he did. 2 CONT 2 CONT The record of a John Coffee(y) arriving in Elizabeth City co. VA in 2 CONC 1637 with a patentee being Nicholas Hill was misread as the original 2 CONC record clearly says "Coffin". I have found no Coffee(y), John or 2 CONC otherwise in early or middle 1600 s in Elizabeth City co., Norfolk co. 2 CONC or any closely surrounding ones, except for a John Coffe(?) on an 2 CONC inquisition or jury in Surry co. in 1669. There was also in the same 2 CONC county an Anthony Koffey(?) on a jury in 1654 and a John Coffer in 2 CONC 1665. The ? after the first two names is not mine, it is of the person 2 CONC recording it from some original. It indicates that this person 2 CONC couldn't read it and was guessing at the spelling. There is also a 2 CONC John Coffin in Isle of Wight co. in 1697 and several Coffers, 2 CONC inclcuding a John about this time. 2 CONT 2 CONT Going further north in Virginia the records of Northumberland and 2 CONC Lancaster cos. have several Coffins, Coffers and Coffee(y)s in the mid 2 CONC to late 1600s and early 1700s. None of these seems to be a John except 2 CONC a John Coffin or Coffins in 1669-70. In the early 1700s we find Edward 2 CONC Coffee(y) in Essex co. and later his sons John & Edward, Jr. in 2 CONC Spotsylvania and other counties. 2 CONT 2 CONT In sum I have seen nothing to demonstrate that there was a John 2 CONC Coffee(y) in the area where this Jolliffe family lived or a Mary who 2 CONC married a John Coffee(y). If anyone should have any further records on 2 CONC this matter I would appreciate them corresponding with me as I would 2 CONC like to solve this problem. Finally, it should be noted that even if 2 CONC there were a Mary Jolliffe-John Coffey marriage there seems to be no 2 CONC connection with Edward in Essex co. who was most likely an immigrant 2 CONC and indentured servant, and not a son of some Coffey already in 2 CONC Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Anne POWELL (daughter of Thomas POWELL and Mary PLACE) was born 2 CONC between 1683 and 1685 in Essex Co., VA.
