Bergerot House

Bergerot House

The owners/occupants of the house were my great grandfather, Jean Andre, who passed away in 1932 at 88, and my great grandmother, Marie Louise, who passed away in 1930 at 95. My grandfather's (a.k.a. Bon Pere) sister, Marie Clotilde, lived there alone until she passed away in 1947 at 77. They were the only survivors of the six children born to their parents. The oldest, Albert, born in 1866, lived only 3-1/2 years, next came Bon Pere in 1867, who lived to 92, then Aunt Marie in 1870, followed by Auguste in 1872, who lived 1 day, Lucien in 1875, who lived 8 days, and last was Lucie in 1881, who lived 4-1/2 years. Life was a precious privilege in those days!

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

This exceptional home has been featured in many local historic and architectural publications. According to HERE TODAY*, this home was "...built for John Andrew Bergerot, a prominent member of San Francisco's French community in 1912."

The facade is period Baroque in design, combining Italiante style with French influence. Ionic fluted pilasters begin at the first floor and are repeated, uncapped, framing the second story arched windows. The first floor facade is delineated by quoins. Varied and ornamented brackets support three levels and dentils below and urn shaped finials above. There is a lower balcony with balustrade and a second story bracketed and balustraded false balconies.

The entry portico and upper facade have broken pediments and the whole is crowned with a painted slate mansard roof having dormers capped by bracketed, curved and voluted topped pediments.

From the recessed side porch, double entry doors set with cut, beveled, leaded glass lead to an elegant reception hall. To the left is a well proportioned living room with a deeply coffered ceiling, fireplace, painted mantel and custom glazed walls. To the right of the entry hall is a spacious paneled library dominated by elegantly carved open, glass-fronted, and closed cabinetry, framing a tile-faced fireplace. There are windows at both ends of the room and a coffered ceiling. The paneling in this room and the entry hall and stairway has been tastefully fabric panelled.

A hallway leads from the reception hall to a classic dining room and outstanding modern kitchen. The modern conveniences of bright tile counters, an island sink counter with disposal and dishwasher, subtle lighting, a restaurant Wolf range; separate bar sink, and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to the garden deck blend with the old world appeal of custom-built oak paneled cabinetry, refinished natural wood floors, range hood vented into the exposed brick flue, complimentary decor, and attractive open floor plan.

The deck leads to the north garden. There are rear stairs from the kitchen to the boiler room and the very large wine room fully fitted with floor to ceiling wine racks. The rear stairs also lead up the the second and third floor of the home. From the reception hall a stairway leads down to a very large high ceilinged music or game room on the ground floor with direct access to the sidewalk or the garage area.

From the reception hall the balustraded stairway leads to a partially balconied second floor hall. The main post of the stairway is topped with an art nouveau bronze light fixture.

The second floor consists of a large master bedroom with fireplace and adjoining custom tiled master bath; three other bedrooms, one of which has a view of the bay with sliding glass doors opening onto a spacious sundeck; and a second bath which has been custom designed. There are also complete laundry facilities off the back hall.

The third floor, which is reached by a back stairway, consists of a den or bedroom on the north side with a fine view of the bay, a large room on the east side which could be a bedroom or workroom, and a very large and bright south room. There is also a bathroom on the top floor.
