Subject: Pocket Bird Recorder
Hi Bruce - Just a quick note to tell you about my experiences with Pocket
Bird Recorder during my recent trip to Costa Rica. First, you should know
that, that I'm a heavy Pocket PC user. I use it for email and keep my
ebooks, music, contacts and astronomy programs all on my Pocket PC. So, when
I took up birding a couple of years ago and was looking for a program to
keep my records on - it had to capable of accepting information from my
Pocket PC. This was one of the main reasons that I purchased Pocket Bird
Recorder and Wildlife Recorder.
My first real use of Pocket Bird Recorder was during a recent trip to Costa
Rica. The fact that it is set up by trip within site makes the format
similar to
Wildlife
Recorder and therefore easy to
learn and use. When I
entered a new sighting I only had to enter the first few letters of the bird
and then all available choices were indicated. All the other options like
number, breeding, age, did you get a photograph etc., are all selected with
just a tick mark. The only thing I had to write out were the optional notes.
I regularly checked Pocket BR for a list of all my trip sightings including
an indication of which ones were new for my Life List. Everthing worked
perfectly.
When I returned home I uploaded the information into Wildlife Recorder and
I'm now adding my photos. Thanks guys for a great program. Everything I was
looking for. - Ti m Nelson - Ontario, Canada
What I like most about this program,
and what made me switch from Thayer Birding Software to it several years ago, is
that it has a PDA application. Until very recently, I used a Palm Pilot in the
field to record my sightings. When my Tungsten E died while birding in Chile
last month. I decided to take Jack's recommendation and switch to a Pocket
PC. I am in the process of getting it to do all the things I want it to, and am
looking forward to using it for Wildlife Recorder. I believe it will be even
easier to use than the Palm. And let me tell you, there's nothing like going
back to your room after 12 hours of intensive birding in the Tropics, uploading
your day's list into your laptop, and in just a few minutes, figuring out how
many new birds you saw today, how many species and how many of them are new that
you've seen on your trip, etc. It adds a whole new dimension to birding, making
it even more fun than it would otherwise be. And needless to say, I love going
birding! (as posted to BirdForum 2007)
