GIFTS AND GRANTS

CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION

[Members Resolution No. 905, May 17, 1997]

Resolution by the Honorable Bernie Richter, 3rd Assembly District; and the Honorable Kerry Mazzoni, 8th Assembly District; Relative to Commending Barbara B. Gately: Text

WHEREAS, Barbara B. Gately, Director of the Marin County Law Library, has been instrumental in the donation of regional case reporters, in the form of "advance sheets," to the Butte County Law Library for more than 10 years, and in recognition of her efforts to assist that law library in the delivery of public services, she is deserving os special public commendations from the State of California; and

WHEREAS, The gift arose from a movement in the County of Marin begun in or before the year 1986 which encouraged local government to recycle reusable resources; concurrently in 1986 filing fee revenues, a statutorily-apportioned portion of which is earmarked to support the law library, in Butte County, fell considerably short of what was then needed to maintain a number of Butte County Law Library's standing-order publications in up-to-date condition; and as a consequence, the Butte Countly Law Library Board of Trustees cut the Law Library's subscription to six regional case reporters containing the published State case law reports of the greater part of the Eastern and Southeastern and Midwestern and Southwestern united States-the coverage for 31 states in all; and

WHEREAS, Mindful of Marin County's push to recycle usable resources, and mindful of Butte County Law Library's need, Barbara Gately, commencing in or around August/September 1986, retained all of Marin County Law Library's advance sheets that were superseded by hardbound volumes in the previous one to two months and commenced shipping them in bulk shipments at one to two month intervals continuously thereafter; and

WHEREAS, To date, this gift to the Law Library has amounted to nearly 3,000 items, which, in hardbound volume comparison is the equivalent of 750 permanently-bound volumes, and as a result, 10 years later, Butte County Law Library has been able to maintain in full form the National Reporter System, two-thirds of which was formally canceled by reason of a budget necessity occurring 10 years ago; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY ASSEMBLY MEMBERS BERNIE RICHTER AND KERRY MAZZONI, That Barbara B. Gately be commended for her exemplary record of service to the people of the State of California through the donation of advance sheets of regional case reporters in support of Butte County Law Library's delvery of public services, and that she be extended the appreciation and gratitude of the public.
