The San Juan Unified School District would like each upper grade student to read 25 books over the course of a school year. Because many of the Rapid Learner students select books that are quite lengthy, we will attempt to have each student read at least 20 books for the year.

Each time a student completes a book, s/he needs to fill out the form titled "I've Read Another Book". These are available in the classroom on the side counter. As a book is finished, the paper needs to be turned in. This should be an ongoing process over the course of the year. The form needs to be filled out for each and every book that is read. This is the manner in which I will keep a count of books and pages read during the school year.

Each month, students need to fill out a book evaluation form. This is to be done on one of the books that has been read. An "I've Read Another Book" form needs to be turned in for this book as well. This is a simple evaluation and has the students working with the comprehension strategy of evaluation. A total of nine of these needs to be completed over the course of the school year. The forms are available at all times at the side counter as well.

All work can be turned in as it is completed. There is a basket at the side counter where students may turn the work in as it is completed. There is no real due date on any of it, but the pace should be 6-7 books and three evaluations per trimester. That will ensure completion of the requirements for the year.

Students may be asked to due an oral presentation of one of their books at some time during the school year. A form will be given to the students to use should that assignment become one that we use.

In order encoureage students to select different types of books to read, a genre sheet will be given out to the students. The student needs to record his or her books on his or her own sheet in order to keep track of the genres completed. The genre sheet can be downloaded from the Internet should a new one become necessary. |
