1. About Killing
At sunset in the forest Notire Basura came upon a monk who was about
to make a meal of a hare which he had roasted over a small fire.
Inviting Notire to share his repast, he asked, "Tell me, venerable
sir, is it evil to dine upon one's fellow creatures?"
"You cannot live a day but at the expense of the lives of other creatures,"
Notire replied.
"In each moment of your life your body kills and absorbs the bodies
of innumerable living creatures who, but for the diligence of your unconscious
body, would kill and dine upon you. The lion eats the jackal; the jackal
eats the fox; the fox eats the mouse, and the worms eat them all; and no
doubt beasties smaller yet eat the worms.
If killing for food were evil, all would eat grass. "
The monk was enlightened. |
