23. Disillusionment

Before he departed on his journey to the West, Notire Basura came upon a monk who was sitting zazen upon a large stone contemplating an egg which he held in his hand. "What are you contemplating? Notire asked.

The monk replied, " If I open my hand, which will break -- the egg or the stone?

Notire took the egg from the monk's hand and immediately ate it, saying, "Cause and effect are judgments of the mind. Nature knows no causes and seeks no effects and renders no judgments. Therefore, be like nature, for you cannot not be like nature. "

The monk was enlightened.

"The Sayings of Notire Basura" is a work in progress.  As Notire provides inspiration so
will his words will be written here.
