25. Seeking the Way
It is written that In another part of the forest Notire Busara came
upon a group of monks who were engaged in enacting some sort of drama.
Each looked at the others, who in turn peered narrowly at the watcher.
"What are you doing?" Notire inquired.
"We are enacting the role of monks playing monks; and each of us plays
the part assigned to him by the group."
"But who is your audience?" Notire asked.
"Each monk is the audience," the monk replied. "All are the audience
of each. We watch each other watching each other. In this manner we conform
our conduct to one another and thus avoid deviation from the Way."
"And pray tell," said Notire, " What is "the Way?"
"The Way is the way that we see each other acting," explained the monk.
Notire bowed politely, saying, " I think I have been enlightened."
