30. The Scrape-Goat
In another part of the forest Notire Busara came upon a cluster of monks
surrounding a shorn goat which stood patiently while the monks uttered
incoherent incantations, all the while appearing to plaster some invisible
substance upon its body.
"What is happening here?" Notire inqired.
"It is the ancient and sacred ceremony for the Disposal of Karma," the
monk replied. "Each participant plasters his accumulation of Karma on the
Goat, which is then driven off into the forest."
"And is the Goat then devoured by the carnivores?" asked Notire.
"Oh, no, replied the monk. "It is captured by another group of
Monks in a distant part of the forest, where they scrape off the Karmic-plaster
and replace it with their own, where upon they drive it off into the forest
where we re-capture it and repeat the process. Thus we are never without
Karma."
"And what disposal is made of the Karma which is scraped off the Goat?"
Notire asked.
"We sustain ourselves by putting it up in neat little packages which
we purvey to our students," said the monk.
"The price of enlightenment is high," Notire said, departing. |
