These lessons are designed for the new user. If you are new to Windows then there will be lots for you to learn here. If you are just new to the Internet, there will be a few things here that may seem a bit basic for you to muddle through, but there is still some good information for you here! Not matter how new you are (or not), I do take a few things for granted. I expect that you know how to connect your computer to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and how to log on to the Internet. Well, DUH! if you couldn't do that you wouldn't be reading this, HUH?! Beyond that, if you have been using Windows for a week or more, I would suspect that you will be able to accomplish everything in this first set of four lessons. Don't expect a lot of slick graphics, fancy layouts, or nifty animations in these lessons. Most of the material is written out step-by-step and you will find a few pictures on each page where I felt that they would help out the new user. Additionally, these lessons are written with WIndows XP in mind, but are quite applicable to Windows 95 and 98 as well. As you got through these lessons you will find some places where it will be handy to be able to see the instructions AND be able to access your desktop at the same time. You may print a single copy of the lessons for your own personal use, but these may NOT be reproduced or distributed in any form. if you know someone who might have use of these instructions, give them my web address, and let them come to these pages on their own. As you go through these lessons I would VERY much appreciate it if you would keep some notes and E-Mail me some ideas that may include: any ideas on how to improve the lessons, anything that may need further explanation, anything that needs illustration, parts that were more difficult to understand than others, any additional lessons you would like to see here, and maybe how long it took you to complete each lesson. Any comments that might assist me in improving these pages would be VERY helpful and much appreciated. This is all presented FREE, so I believe I am not asking for much in return.
Take your time, be patient, and read EVERYTHING as you go through these lessons! Don't expect to finish all the material in one sitting. You will learn more if you complete these lessons over two or three days. Here are the topics we cover/things you will be doing in these four lessons: *- Some safety pointers when working on the Internet *- Some information about computer viruses *- How to access "My Computer" *- How to use "My Computer" to locate a program *- How to create a 'shortcut' on your desktop *- Open "My Computer" and create new folders on your hard drive *- Connect to a website and download a program from the Internet *- Install the program you just downloaded *- Delete uneeded files |
