Lessons For New Users - Lesson 3

In this lesson you will...
*- Install the program you just downloaded
  *- Learn to delete files

You may have noticed that the file you downloaded in the last lesson ends with '.exe'. This means that it is ready to 'run'- an executable program. But before we continue, it is a very good idea to close all other programs first (It is usually OK to keep "My Computer" open- I have never had a problem with that). Windows is quite stable and you can usually install most programs when others are running, but it is NOT advisable.

To install ZoneAlarm just open the "DOWNLOAD" folder where the file 'zlsSetup_51_001.exe' is located then double click on the file (not the folder).

I have a lesson on protecting phone connections which includes a discussion of ZoneAlarm in the University pages (Computer 207) which goes into this in more detail. Also refer to the help file in ZoneAlarm as we all the information at the ZoneLabs website.       Once you have installed ZoneAlarm (it will guide you thorough the steps and let you know when it is done), you can delete the downloaded file. There is little reason to keep the old one but many reasons to delete it:
- It takes up space on your hard drive
- Eventually it will get lost in a pile of downloaded and unused files in the "DOWNLOAD" folder.
- New versions will become avbailable making this version obsolete.
- If you need a copy you can always just download it again.
-The program can be set to look for and download updates on its own.

     To delete the original file:

A) Navigate to the "DOWNLOAD" folder to find the zlsSetup_51_011.exe file. Select the file- the file's name should be highlighted as shown here (the name may vary depending on the version):

B) RIGHT click on the file name and select "Delete." A dialog box opens that looks like this:

ALWAYS read these boxes to be sure what is happening! Some of these can look similar but do very different things- some of which may not be good for you or your computer! In this case, select "yes."

That's IT! You now know how to use "My Computer" to navigate through your hard drive, create folders on your hard drive, save files to that folder, install applications downloaded from the Internet, and delete files from your computer.
