Hi
Who: The Sacramento Wheelmen bicycling club members and guests.
Bring a friend.

When: Pretty much monthly, check Wheelmen Ride Schedule
Log-in on Ride Roster before announcements and 8:00 a.m. departure.
An early start is necessary for some to finish before dark.
Log-out after ride so we know you finished OK (clipboard on back right tire)

Where: From C-Bar-C Park (ample FREE parking and toilets) in Citrus Heights, CA on Oak Ave (light half mile East of Fair Oaks Blvd.), West to the Davis In-N-Out Burger, or East to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, and return.

What: Choose one of eleven (11) routes with your friends. Pick a flat route heading West, or a foothill route heading East. If you want a shorter ride, just start out on one of these routes, and turn around to go back when you have half the miles you want. Routes are not swept.

West: Choose a ride from 5 related easy, flat routes of 107, 83, 79, 55, or 23 miles with very little traffic, heading West along the American River Parkway Bike Trail to the Davis In-N-Out Burger, and return.

A. The 107.4 mile century West ride is really fun, easy, flat, flexible, self-contained with very little car traffic. See Folsom Lake, both sides of Lake Natoma, the entire world famous American River Parkway Bike Trail in both directions, Old Town Sacramento, the mighty Sacramento River, infamous Yolo Causeway, collegiate Davis, 3 counties, with trade winds at your back in the morning and Delta breeze at your back in the afternoon, and enjoy a great hamburger with your friends. There are plenty of restrooms, drinking fountains, and places to snack along the way. This is about as scenic and easy as any century you'll find.

B. The 83.2 mile metric West ride goes down Fair Oaks Blvd. to cut off the hill, Folsom Lake, and Lake Natoma, but continues on to Davis and return.

C. The 79.6 mile short ride follows the century ride, does the entire world famous American River Parkway Bike Trail in both directions, but returns from Fanny Ann's Saloon in Old Town.

D. The 55.2 mile shorter ride follows the metric ride down Fair Oaks Blvd. to join the world famous American River Parkway Bike Trail, but returns from Fanny Ann's Saloon in Old Town Sacramento.

E. The 22.8 mile shortest ride follows the century ride up the hill, by Folsom Lake, along Lake Natoma, and then returns on Fair Oaks Blvd. leaving time to drive to Davis for a burger (I-80 Richards Blvd. exit). This ride is the most scenic per mile. Bring the kids along.

East: Choose a ride from 6 related Sierra Foothills routes of 103, 84, 80, 75, 64, or 62 miles, heading East. 4 routes circumnavigate Folsom Lake counter clockwise, 2 circumvent the canyon, 5 go to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, and all return. When the Sierra Century brochure says, “PLEASE TRAIN APPROPRIATELY!” these are the types of rides to which it is referring. Also, great climbing endurance training for the Oregon Tour, European Tour, Zodiac Tours, etc.

1. The 102.8 mile (6,250 foot climb) century East ride climbs through Cameron Park, Skinners, Rescue, Lotus, up Prospectors grade, Garden Valley, Greenwood, and Cool in beautiful and rugged El Dorado County. It then descends 1,100 feet down the breathtaking American River Canyon and back up 900 feet on Old Foothill Road to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger for lunch. With the climbing basically done, it continues on a ribbon of gratifying, descending rollers with stunning panoramic views of the Sierra Mountains, farming meadows, and the Sacramento Valley through pastoral Placer County toward Kilaga Springs, near Lincoln, near Virginiatown, to Penryn, and Loomis then finish. A days ride for many.

2. The 61.7 mile (4,750 foot climb) metric East ride climbs up Salmon Falls Road and through the American River Canyon to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, and back down Auburn Folsom Road for the shortest Folsom Lake circumnavigation.

3. The 80.2 mile right loop ride climbs up to Lotus, across to Cool, through the American River Canyon to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, then returns down Auburn Folsom Road. The most climb per mile.

4. The 84.3 mile (5,546 foot climb) left loop ride climbs up Salmon Falls Road and through the American River Canyon to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, then returns by Lincoln. This is the second longest foothill ride.

5. The 74.8 mile El Dorado ride skips the American River Canyon by climbing up to Lotus, across to Cool, then coming back down Salmon Falls Road. This is the only foothill route that does not go through Auburn.

6. The 64.2 mile (3,300 foot climb) Placer ride skips the American River Canyon by climbing up Auburn Folsom Road to the Auburn In-N-Out Burger, and coming back by Lincoln. This is the least climb per mile of the foothill rides.

Why: Build endurance and stamina on a monthly basis – they get easier and faster each time.
Burn 5,926 aerobic calories in one day (865 calories/hr at 15 mph weighing 190 lbs)
Long rides burn fat. Short rides burn carbohydrates.
And, at least for the day, an unrestricted diet!

Dress: Pearl Izumi casual with current Wheelmen’s jersey (helmet required)

Registration: No registration fee, no reservation to make, no catered rest stops, no SAG, and no jersey, T-shirt, patch, or poster to buy. There is no racing and finish times are not recorded. Just top off your tire pressure and log-in on event day before departure.

Instructions: Study the Ride Instructions for the route you choose, or create a GPS route. Then download the PDF file from http://home.surewest.net/g/century.html and print the appropriate page to clip on your handlebars for the trip. You may choose light paper and water proof color ink. Limited black and white copies on 20 pound paper may be available at the start.

Re-group: On West routes, at the top of the hill in Beals Point going, and in both directions by the Watt St. Bridge restroom and drinking fountain near the 10 mile marker, and in Old Town by the public restrooms next to O'Mally's Irish Pub (1109 2nd St.).

On East routes, at the top of major climbs.

Award: This monthly ride puts the Sacramento Wheelmen in line with the UltraMarathon Cycling Association's new program: The Year-Rounder Century Challenge – to encourage cyclists to ride a century every month. See http://www.ultracycling.com/training/century.html. Completing at least one Mileage Challenge ride in each calendar month, with up to two make-up rides, qualifies you for a Year-Rounder medal award.

Weather: Rides are not likely to be cancelled due to weather conditions.
Rides will progress in a safe manner for the conditions.

American River Canyon Picture
The Sacramento Wheelmen at mile 50 of the hugely popular, monthly In-N-Out Century East ride with a 6.250 foot vertical climb, having descended 1,100 feet from Cool into the canyon on Highway 49, now on Old Forrest Hill Road climbing 900 feet to the bridge above (third highest bridge in the United States) to Auburn, with the American River North Fork below, just before the confluence with the Middle Fork. Many deep water fish would be in school here if the Auburn Dam had been built.
