“Restoring the Wild” Native Plants & Wildflowers in Native Village The Roseville Green Thumb Garden Club, member of California Garden Clubs, Inc., in partnership with the City of Roseville 's Maidu Interpretive Center and Historic Site, proposes to plant and maintain native wildflowers and shrubs around a restored native village site. This native village site, being recreated by the City of Roseville , lies within Maidu Regional Park and a 7,000 year old Nisenan (southern Maidu) archaeological site on the National Register of Historic Places. The recreated village and planting site also lie directly behind the Maidu Interpretive Center , an Indian Museum and Nature Learning Center .
The Roseville Green Thumb Garden Club, working with Maidu volunteers, plans to enhance this recreated village by planting and maintaining colorful wildflowers and shrubs. The project planting design will incorporate as many ethno botanically useful shrubs as possible, in four gardens 4 feet by 15 feet long. One garden for medical, one for tools, one for foods and one for wildflowers, thereby enhancing the interpretive potential of the village visit for children. Guided tours comprise the bulk of visitation, so these plantings will enhance both the beauty and the educational value of the village following restoration. Over 20,000 school children, their teachers and parents tour through the Maidu Interpretive Center and Historic Site each year. |
