Change oil and lubricant in garden equipment, drain gas to prevent varnish formation or add a gas stabilizer. Water if rainfall is sparse. First dormant spray of stone fruit trees. Plant cool season annuals; pansies, violas and primroses. Last chance to plant spring bulbs. Look for perennials such as carnations, coral bell and marguerites. Cut chrysanthemum stems to 3 inches. Transplant cold-season vegetables, you'll get the best results in early spring if you plant them now. Sow seeds of fava beans, lettuce, peas, radishes and spinach. Rake leaves for the compost pile. Slightly prune top-heavy trees to reduce wind resistance. Prune evergreens. Clean-up the yard.
