What is fan fiction?
Fan Fiction is a writing form that borrows the characters from existing works and creates new stories that attempt to expand on those characters' fictional lives. The actors who portray these characters are off limits. The actors created characters that inspired new fiction. Fan fiction continues the characters' fictional lives.
I wish the actors well in their future endeavors. Please do not confuse the actors with the characters. The characters can be borrowed to tell new stories. The fine actors who play them should be left to enjoy their well-deserved privacy.
Can television make social change?
The positive portrayal of any minority is a good thing. Studies have shown that television and movies change social perception, even when people understand the stories told are fictional. Unfortunately, negative portrayals, or portrayals that end in tragedy can do serious damage.
I was personally appalled by the message Tara's murder sent to young gays and lesbians everywhere. There is a long established cliché in Hollywood; if a character is gay, they either die, go insane, or turn evil. This teaches gays and lesbians that they do not deserve to be happy. I will not support a show that perpetuates this cliché. Here are a few examples of the cliché and here is an explanation of what it is and why it matters in Tara's case.
What can we do?
Please invest a few minutes to click over to the DO SOMETHING page and email someone on the list. Tell them you are angry that they killed Tara. It would help if you tell them that you will not watch the show without Tara (if that's how you feel). Ratings talk. We, as fans, must speak out or Hollywood will never give gays and lesbians any happy endings. It will only take a few minutes, and I would be extremely grateful. Willow and Tara can find happiness within fan fiction, and I encourage you to read those stories. Do not subject yourself to cliched, damaging portrayals on televsion. Do not pay to see movies that send the message that you cannot find happiness. Let your money send Hollywood a message-- we will not accept the cliché. We can be happy.
