West Virginia became the thirty-fifth
stae on June 20, 1863. It had been part of the state of Virginia
until it became its own state on that date. It got its name because
it was formed from the western counties of Virginia, which was
named for Elizabeth, the Queen of England. West Virginia ranks
41st in size out of the fifty states. West Virginia's capital
is Charleston and it's been the capital since 1885.
