John Howland Falls Overboard
by MaureenIn the middle of the big storm, a Pilgrim named John Howland was desperate for air. He was tall and skinny. He had a beard, brown hair, and blue eyes. Nobody was allowed on the top deck, but John didn't obey the rules. He went up onto the deck.
The wind was as strong as a hurricane and he could smell the salt of the ocean. He felt the drops of water blowing against him, and saw fifty foot waves.
"No! Stop!" yelled a fat, short sailor with a white shirt. But when the sailors weren't looking, John continued on up to the top deck. John wore big puffy pants. His collar was as white as bleach.
The wind was so strong that John was blown right off the deck and into the water!
"Help! Help!" screamed John. "Hel ..." Then he went under water.
The sailors came running up.
"We're coming!" they answered. Fortunately, there was a rope dangling off to the side of the ship. John was able to grab on to the rope, and the sailors pulled him back up onto the ship.
"Did you hear me?" said one of the sailors.
"Yes, but I was so desperate for air I just couldn't resist," said John. He was shivering so much he could barely talk. He was so cold he almost died. The other Pilgrims had to warm him up with a blanket.
