Squanto and the Pilgrims
by Elise LittlefieldAfter that, Samoset went to Chief Massassoit's village. Massassoit was the leader of the Wampanoag people, who lived near the Pilgrim village. "Wampanoag" means "People of the Dawn." It was pitch black by the time Samoset got to the Wampanoag village.
Hoo Hoo! Hoo Hoo! You could hear an owl hooting from above.
"Chief Massassoit, I met these people called the Pilgrims," Samoset said. "They have no food and they are not very good at living off the land. Can you send one of your people to help them?"
"I have heard of the Pilgrims," said Chief Massassoit. "We don't like the Pilgrims, They are stealing our food."
"No, they are not," replied Samoset. "They are good. They came here because they wanted to be free."
"All right then, we will send Squanto," the chief said. "He speaks the language of the white people." Squanto was wearing brown boots and brown leather clothes. He had black hair with a feather through it. When Samoset came back to Plymouth Colony, he brought Squanto with him.
"Hello, Englishmen, we welcome you to our land!" Squanto said.
That night, Squanto returned to the Wampanoag village.
"How was your day?" said Chief Massassoit.
"Great," answered Squanto. "Their clothes were as white as snow, and their boots were shining like silver."
The next day, Squanto came back to the Pilgrims. He showed them how to plant corn and make hills and put three fish in them. That makes the corn grow better. He also showed them where to find clams, and where to catch the fish called alewives.
