Massassoit's Sickness
by Chris BeringerThat same summer, Chief Massassoit came down with a horrible illness. All his Native friends and relatives stood around him and cried.
"He going to die!" one of the relatives named Moseses said.
"I know I will die, but not in vain," Chief Massassoit said. Nearby, the Pilgrims heard about Massassoit's sickness.
"Maybe we should have somebody go visit him," said William Brewster.
"Yes, we should send Edward Winslow," agreed William Bradford. "He's Massassoit's friend." So Edward Winslow came to the Wampanoag village, and went into Massassoit's wigwam. By the time Edward Winslow came in, Massassoit was blind and he couldn't open his mouth. His teeth were clenched very tight. Massassoit thought he would never see Edward Winslow but he was glad to have him there.
"I am happy that you are here, Winsnow," Massassoit thought. He couldn't talk, but still he was happy. The Natives could not say the letter "l" so they pronounced Winslow's name as "Winsnow."
Edward Winslow had brought some goodies for Massassoit,
but he couldn't eat them, since his mouth was clamped shut. So Edward had to open his mouth with a knife. When Edward opened his mouth, he saw that Massassoit's tongue was very swollen, and his mouth was all stuffy inside. He knew he had to give Chief Massassoit some food. So he took his knife and scooped all this horrible junk out of his mouth. And he managed to get some food in.
"I need the fastest runner in your village to go fetch some chicken broth from our town" said Edward. So Wantaboona, the fastest man in the village, ran all the way to the Pilgrim village, carrying a basket.
"I need some broth from your town!" said Wantaboona. So they had to kill a chicken and they made some broth and put it into a pitcher. Wantaboona ran all the way back, and Edward poured some of the chicken broth into Massassoit's mouth. When Massassoit tasted the broth, he felt much better. So Edward kept on giving him broth, and all of a sudden Massassoit jumped out of bed.
"I feel much better!" yelled Massassoit, as he jumped up and down in joy.
Suddenly, he remembered that he should warn Edward Winslow that some of the Massachusett tribe were planning on attacking Thomas Weston and the other Englishmen of the Wessagassett Colony.
"Winsnow!" he began. "The Massachusett tribe is going to attack Thomas Weston and his men. There will be war! So be careful!"
When Edward Winslow heard this, he sent the tribe's runner, Wantaboona, to warn Myles Standish and the other Pilgrims about what was happening.
