The Love Triangle Explodes!
by Olivia Weill and Maureen KertesCrunch! Crunch! Crunch!
"What am I going to tell Myles?" wondered John Alden, as he walked through the forest back to the Standish house. He had just talked to Priscilla Mullins about Myles' marriage request, and Priscilla had said, "Speak for yourself, John."
"I wonder what will happen if I tell Myles the truth? Oh well, I'm telling the truth anyhow."
say?"Click! John opened the door of the Standish house.
"Well?" Myles blurted. "Well? Hurry! What did she say?"
"Um .... she said, 'speak for yourself, John,'" said John.
"She what ?" shrieked Myles. "You traitor! I will never trust you again!"
Knock! Knock! Knock! They suddenly heard a knocking at the door.
"Captain Myles! Captain Myles!" It was Wantaboona, the Wampanoag tribe messenger.
"The Massachusett tribe is going to attack Thomas Weston's colony!" Wantaboona shouted.
"Thank you, Wantaboona," said Myles, picking up his gun.
"And I'll deal with you later, John," sneered Myles. He quickly rounded up eight other Pilgrims from the village and headed off toward the village of the Massachusett tribe. A Native man named Hobomok, from the Wampanoag tribe, followed along so he could give chief Massassoit a report of what happened.
Many days passed at the Pilgrim village, and Myles Standish did not return! Some people thought he was dead.
One bright spring day, John was walking along outside. All of a sudden, he saw Priscilla. She was wearing a plain, but beautiful dress. She had a big smile on her face. Her hair glistened in the sun like gold, and her teeth were as white as snow. John knew this was his chance. All week, he had been wondering if it would work out to marry Priscilla.
"Uh, Priscilla," he said, "will you marry me?"
"Let me think," she answered. John waited.
"I've made up my mind," she said at last. "I will marry you."
John stood there stupidly for a moment.
"I'm so happy!" he said finally.
