Myles at War
by Paul HaganMeanwhile, Myles Standish was walking to the village of the Massachusett tribe. The wind was blowing softly through the trees. It was sunny and nice. The trees were red, orange, brown, and yellow. It was so quiet, it was scary. But as he got nearer, Myles heard the sound of Native drums. He could see the many wigwams of the village, with fires burning inside them. It was a frightening day.
Suddenly, Myles saw two giant Native men walking toward him. He walked up to meet them, with his men following behind.
"You leader of white men, you little baby!" said one of the Indians. It was Wituwamat, one of the leaders of the Massachusett tribe that wanted to fight the settlers. He had two red lines under his eyes, and long black hair in a braid.
"You little baby, go play with the children," the other Native said to Myles. His name was Pecksuot, the other leader. Pecksuot had a knife as bright as the sun. Right then, Myles grabbed the knife from Pecksuot and jammed it into his heart. Pecksuot fell to the ground. His mouth was wide open, and so were his eyes. He looked brave and strong.
Wituwamat reached for his knife to try to stab Myles Standish. He struck at Myles, but Myles sprang back to load his gun. Myles stood up, but Wituwamat was not there. Myles heard a footstep. Wituwamat was right behind Myles! Three of Myles' men jumped on Wituwamat. But Wituwamat was still fighting. Finally, Wituwamat went down.
"He was a brave man," said John Alden when it was all over.
Hobomok was a man from the Wampanoag tribe who had come along with Myles Standish and his men, and he had watched the whole thing. "Pecksuot bragged about how good he was, and how you are a little man," Hobomok said to Myles Standish, "but you took him down."
After that, the Massachusett tribe did not try to fight any more with Thomas Weston and the other Englishmen at Wessagassett Colony. In fact, just a little while later, they didn't even see them any more. Thomas Weston and his men gave up and left. Everybody, including the Pilgrims, were probably kind of glad to see them go!
