Darkness on a Sunny Day
by Danielle Steinman

Later that year, something horrible happened. It was a sunny day, but darkness came upon the Pilgrim village. Squanto's wonderful life came to an end.

It was the fall of 1623. Squanto came down with a sickness. His face became pale and his bones showed right through his skin. He knew it was his time to go. Governor William Bradford asked him if he had any last words.

"Yes," started Squanto. "I have heard of your heaven. I would like to go there. Can you pray for me?"

"Pray for Squanto!" exclaimed William Bradford. "He was a kind man. Give him what he wants." The Pilgrims all prayed. Squanto's nose began to bleed. He knew it was time for him to go.

"I will see you in heaven," Squanto said. His eyes closed. His heart stopped. His head fell, and he died instantly.

But now you know how Squanto helped all the Pilgrims. If he didn't then neither you nor I would be here in America. Either way, the Pilgrims came and died, but their history lives on!
