Welcome to the Tell Me A Story Web Site!

Tell Me a Story is where a group of Del Webb residents gather together once a month to share wonderful stories. The activity has grown so popular amongst the residents, it is now a regularly scheduled activity. The meetings take place each month on the second Wednesday.

The group meets at the Arbour Lodge in Del Webb's beautiful Glenbrooke community. All residents are invited and encouraged to join! Sit back and enjoy some great stories and refreshments.

If you have a story to tell, call Don Marler at (916) 684-6654. We would love to hear it!

Leo Plumley and Phil McPeek told of their cold war adventures on the Coast Guard Icebreaker, North Wind.  Their stories of the frozen Arctic, crashing their way through ice and wallowing through storms gave us a look at a unique part of the world and a special way of life.

George and Joan Beitzel described and illustrated the tale of Abraham Lincoln’s deathbed scene in a tiny room across the street from the crime.  A rare photo of the actual room shows enough space for two or three visitors beside the bed, while popular paintings by several acclaimed artists showed up to forty-seven dignitaries present.  Hence, the title George and Joan chose for their story: “The Rubber Room”.

Dick Noonanshowed us how the railroad helped shape Sacramento and the nation as agriculture and manufacturing learned the benefits of cheap and reliable transportation. He also showed how much volunteer effort it takes to rebuild, maintain and operate a railroad as a museum. His extensive knowledge and zeal inspired many of us to visit the California State Railroad Museum this year.

A happy holiday audience enjoyed Alex Gould’s story of his life as a singer and choral director.  His tenor voice was heard on radio and TV from  Hollywood and then in a world-class choir touring the nation and much of the world.  As Minister of Music for a large Sacramento church, he formed and directed sixteen choirs of various ages and directed the Sacramento Symphony Chorus.  Alex’s inspiring story was further enhanced by relating his personal encounters with some famous persons including Bing Crosby, Rock Hudson, and Hilo Hattie.

Who knew a cemetery would hold such interesting stories?  Judy Eitzen is a volunteer docent and member of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Historical Cemetery on Broadway.  She told us of the long history of that gravesite and the stories of some of the famous and infamous buried there.  As a master gardener, she also cultivates the rose garden and other landscaping on the property.  Judy joins other volunteers in period costumes providing tours and dramatizations from the historical archives maintained there.  Judy Eitzen’s audience thoroughly enjoyed her presentation and the refreshments and conversation at TELMAS.

Jim Entrican kept his audience of seventy-eight people enthralled with his “History of Elk Grove”.  Jim grew up here and his wife, AnnaClare, is descended from early settlers.  He told us of some of the community leaders in the mid-nineteenth century, their businesses and challenges.  The Entricans continue to research and record information about the area’s past and present that history to school children and adults in an entertaining way.

Dr. Paul Holland was our September speaker. His title, Alaska, Salmon, and a Blood-Banker, raised our curiosity. He skillfully spoke of each element in his title and wove them together with beautiful photographs to tell a fascinating story.

A lively crowd watched and listened as Dixie Laws spoke about Art in Public Places. Dixie is with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and she showed photos and described several of the many art objects displayed in this area. Several asked and Dixie answered pertinent questions, then we enjoyed the refreshments and conversation that followed.

Don Marler told us some stories from his year in Thailand as a crew member on the AC-130, the four-engine gunship still used by the US Air Force to hunt enemy trucks, guns and tanks. A curious crowd came to the Arbour Lodge to hear Don’s story and enjoy the refreshments and conversation that followed.

Thirty-four residents were fascinated with Sue Facciola’s story at the TELMAS meeting on June ninth. She was the first woman to complete the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) academy of the California Department of Corrections. She later revised the training and operations procedures for hostage rescue teams and recruited several men and women for these complex and dangerous prison operations. Our group asked several questions and Sue explained much about her unusual career.

Mark Hedlund was a hit story-teller as he revealed his passion and extensive experience as a television journalist while he led us through the major stories he covered during his 34-year career. From his record of exclusive's, he told us of chasing a multimillionaire felon from Sacramento to the Greek isle of Crete and being stranded near the top of Half Dome in Yosemite. Mark was at Candlestick Park in San Francisco for the opening of the baseball world series when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit; he spent the next several days recording the fear and loss of lives and property in that tragedy.

TELMAS met on the second Wednesday last month as usual, in the ballroom of the Arbour Lodge. Jim Gore showed amazing photos and told his unique story of bicycling in modern Vietnam. An appreciative crowd of residents thanked Jim and enjoyed some refreshments before and after his presentation.

Sharing stories may be therapeutic for the story-teller, helping them in getting closure of prior life events of significance.

Life is a tapestry of memories, some which unfortunately go unspoken. Stories define the nature of our life, and link us to our history and our future. Memories are made of the stuff that illuminate our legacy.
