We started our family search in Boone County, Iowa and found a book describing the settlement of Beaver Township in which Patrick, John, and Denis Vaughan settled along with other relation including the Cronin and Mahony family members.
An except from The History of Boone Co, Iowa, by Union Historical Company
Through the western part of the county almost parallel with the Des Moines river flows a beautiful stream of water, known to the Indians as Amaqua creek. The Indian name Amaqua means Beaver, hence the early settlers changed the name of this stream to Beaver creek. When the west. era part of the county through which this stream flows was organized into eivil townships, two of them were named after the creek. The Indian name Amaqua being applied to one, and the English name Beaver being applied to the other. The first settlers of Beaver township were: Patrick and John Vaughan, Cornelius and Patrick Cronin. They settled on section 10 in May, 1867. They were originally from Ireland, more recently from Ogden, this county. The first marriage was that of Denis Vaughan and Mary Mahony on April 28, 1869.The first male child born was William Vanghan, born September 15th, 1869. He died August 25th, 1870, this being the first death in the township.
The first school taught was in district No 2 by Patrick Coil, who has since gone to California,
The first school-house was erected in 1871 at a cost of $800. It was located on the southwest corner of the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 10.
The first board of township trustees consisted of Enos Barrot, Patrick Mahoney, John Garlic.
John T. 8. Williams was the first township clerk, and Patrick Cronin the first township assessor.
The first official meetings of the board were held at the residence of J. T. S. Williams. The following are the present municipal officers of the township, who were chosen at the last general election: Justice of the peace—George Goetsman. Assessor—David Chamberlm. Clerk—Patrick Cronin. Trustee—Benjamin Hayer. Constable—Herman Chamberlin.
Amaqua township was organized in January, 1871. The first board of trustees was composed of George Wood, D. M. Girard, D. B. Carrey.
John Smith was the first township clerk, and Gilbert H. Pardall was the first assessor. The official meetings of the township board are held in the Center school-house. Pleasant Hill cemetery is located on the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 16. The M. E. Church of Center school-house was organized in 1869. The Rev. Mr. Snodgrass was the first pastor of this congregation. The membership of this church numbers about twenty-five.
The town of Beaver is located on the south half of the southwest quarter, section 32, township 84, range 28. It was laid out June 30, 1879. This town, though quite young, has become quite a trading point, and is the only shipping place for the people of the west part of Boone and Greene counties. The civil officers of Amaqua township, chosen at the last general election, are as follows:
Assessor—F. W. Jasinsky. Clerk—A. Lee. Trustee—George Shadle. Constable—S. B. Shadle."
We scoured the internet looking to find other family forklore stories that have been passed along verbally and found many stories about each of the families of Vaughan, Hickey and Cronin.
"Family folklore is that my Greatgrand father, Timothy (i think that was his name) came through Canada and Up State New York with several brothers and a sister. He then fought in the Civil War for the Illinois regulars and at the end of the war became a naturalized citizen."
"I have several Vaughan relatives born near Milstreet on the Cork Kerry County line in Ireland. They were all born in the 1820's & 1830's. Came to america around 1850. Ended up in Boone County Iowa near town of Ogden. Serveral brothers--James, John, Timothy, Patrick & Dennis Vaughan."
"A Hickey relative married a John Vaughan probably around 1820 near the town of Milstreet which on the Cork and Kerry County line in Ireland. Their children were all born between 1822 and 1836. Children were John, Dennis, Timothy, Patrick and James Vaughan and they migrated to America around 1850 and finally settled near Ogden in Boone County Iowa. the Hickey relatives sponsored these Vaughn relatives over to America. I do not know what the names of the Hickey relatives were but have been told that the main Hickey sponsored was Timothy Hickey. I know that one Hickey relative name Nora Hickey or Honora Hickey never married and died in Ogden Iowa in 1907-- her obituary states that her parents reside in Ireland and she had a brother named Dennis Hickey (who also did not marry) and he worked for a energy company in southern California--died around 1947."
"I have several names that match yours--I do not know much about my Hickey line--Ihave a few pictures with names written on the back. One picture is Timothy Hickey standing with his son John. I have an obituary that my grandmother kept--it was for Honora Hickey & the obituary said she was born near Milstreet in county Cork Ireland--died in 1908 in Boone County Iowa. The obituray said that she had a brother named Dennis Hickey still living in Los Angeles CA. This Dennis Hickey use to visit my grandmother until he died around 1947."
"I have a relative John Hickey who was the son of Timothy Hickey. Timothy Hickey was living in Boone County Iowa in the 1870's. He was born in County Cork. I don't know what happen to Timothy Hickey & his son John. I do not have the names of other children except some infants buried in Boone County."
"several Hickey relatives came to Boone County Iowa from Cork County Ireland around the years 1840-50.Hickey names I know of are Timothy Hickey, Edward hickey, Nora Hickey, Dennis Hickey,William Hickey and John Hickey. These names may have been brothers and sisters or cousins. They may have moved from Boone County to Des Moines Iowa or elsewhere. They were connected to the Vaughan family-John Vaughan married a Hickey."
"I have at least 2 hickey relatives who lived in Bathrust New South Wales. They were nuns at the convent of sisters of Mercy in New South Wales--Bathrust & concoar. I had other hickey relatives who came to Boone county Iowa in the united states. I may have had other hickey relatives in New south wales but I do not know for sure about this."
"Does your John Hickey have a father named Timothy Hickey. I have a Timothy Hickey with a son named John. I also have another relative named John Hickey with wife named Julia from County Cork Ireland. They had children named Margaret, Lucy, Catherine and at least 1 other daughter. Margaret & Lucy became nuns in Austrilia."
"I am looking for any information on John Vaughan or Vaughn born Kerry, Ireland. He married J. Hickey also from Kerry, Ireland. They had a son, James Vaughan born 1837 Kerry, Ireland and He died 1924 Carroll, Iowa."
My great great grandfather's name is John Barrett. Down the line there is a Flynn. Let me be clear, John Barrett... he married a Catharine Vaughan. John Barrett left cork co in 1864 and went to Montello, WI. Started a homestead, and to this day it remains in the family. There is a Flynn that owns it now and he is around 89 years old. Montello is in Marquette Co.
And the post with the most info:
My Vaughan relatives came from near the town of Milstreet which is right on the border the County Cork and Kerry line in Ireland. They came to America around 1850 to 1854. They are the children of John Vaughan and a Hickey mother. The children who came to America were all born between 1822 and 1836. Hickey relatives sponsored the Vaughan children when they came to America. These Vaughans settled for a short while in New York and then Illinois before working on the railroad to Boone County Iowa and finally settled near Ogden Iowa in Boone County in around 1865. The Vaughan Children are John Vaughan, Patrick Vaughan, Timothy Vaughan, Dennis Vaughan and James Vaughan and I believe a Elizabeth Vaughan who married a Connie Sheehan and also lived near Ogden Iowa. i have much more information on these relatives but I do not have much on the Hickey relatives who came to America or anything about the Vaughan parents who lived near Milstreet in Ireland. I have written to Ireland for more information and have been told that records for that time period have been destroyed.
Clearly we knew alot about the Vaughan family that settled in Boone County, Iowa just from this verbal forklore information. We used the FamilySearch.org website and found the following:
Father - John Vaughan Mother - J. Hickey (did she die before husband John Vaughan?)
Daughters - Mary & Elizabeth (married Connie Sheehan and settled Boone Co, IA)
Daughters from Marriage 2 as noted above - Connie Vaughan
This appears to be our Elizabeth Vaughan whom married Connie Sheehan:

Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa 22 Jan 1913
WinnifredHEARRITY Hoben
Mrs. Patrick HOBEN Dead. Passed Away at Her Home in Highland Township, Saturday Morning.
Mrs. Patrick HOBEN died at the home of her son, Austin HOBEN, several miles southwest of this city, last Saturday morning after an illness of some time. The funeral was held Monday. Services were conducted at the Catholic church at Ruthven by her pastor, Rev. L. CARROLL, of Ayrshire. The burial was in the Ruthven Catholic cemetery where rests the remains of one of her sons. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors at the funeral despite the coldness of the day. The pall bearers were M. FLEMING, M.T. WASHINGTON, F. HAGAN, Owen KELLY, D. FOLEY and J.J. BROWN. Winifred HEARRITY was born at Lewisburg, in the county of Mayo, Ireland, in 1831. Hence she was 82 years of age. She was married at Glasgow, Scotland, October 22, 1860, to Patrick HOBEN. Mr. and Mrs. HOBEN came to the United States in 1861. They came to Iowa in April of that year. They lived for some time in Boone county. In 1883 they moved to Palo Alto and located on a farm in Highland township. Owing to their advanced years, they lived with their son, Austin HOBEN, during the last few seasons. Mr. HOBEN, two sons and three daughters survive. The sons are Austin and Michael of Highland township. The daughters are Mrs. Mary VAUGHAN of Emmetsburg, Mrs. Margaret BRASCH of Deadwood, Nebraska, and Mrs. Sadie GOLDEN of Valley Junction, Iowa. Mrs. HOBEN was one of the truly devoted, earnest, zealous wives and mothers of the community in which she lived. She was considerate and active, but quiet and unassuming. She tried to do, in her own humble way, her duty in her home, in her church, and in society in general. Her neighbors found her obliging and hospitable and her friends cordial and loyal. Providence was generous to her, allowing her the use of a life that was long in years and rich in opportunities for spiritual development and material achievement. That she made good use of the blessings that were so generously bestowed on her is the testimony of all who had an opportunity of judging her motives and her deeds. The Democrat joins our many citizens in extending sincere sympathy to the aged husband and the surviving sons and daughters.
DEATH COMES AT RIPE OLD AGE OF 93 Patrick Hoben Who Settled in Highland Township in 1882
Saturday evening at 10:20 Patrick Hoben, one of the oldest citizens of our county, passed away at the home of his son, Austin Hoben, in Highland township with whom he lived for many years. He was more or less crippled with rheumatism for nearly forty years but he did not become seriously ill until last Thursday. Having attained the age of 93, advancing years kept steadily undermining his health and strength and he was finally forced to yield to the inevitable. The funeral was held yesterday. Services were conducted in the Catholic church at Ruthven, Father Conley celebrating the requiem mass. The burial was in the family lot in the parochial cemetery at that place. A large number of old neighbors and friends were in attendance. Several from this city were present. The pall bearers were M.J. Donahue, John Burns, Michael Daily, C.C. Egan, John Bough, and John Joyce. Mr. Hoben was born at Eriff, near West Port, county of Mayo, Ireland in January, 1828. His age was 93. He was married in his native country to Winnie Hearrity in 1860. Mr. and Mrs. Hoben came to the United States in 1861 and located in Clinton county, this state. In 1868 they became residents of Boone county and in 1882 settled on a farm in Highland township this county. Their son Michael still resides on the place. Mr. Hoben is survived by two sons and two daughters. The sons are Michael and Austin of Highland township and the daughters are Mrs. Michael Golden of Valley Junction and Mrs. Henry Brash of Deadwood, South Dakota. Mrs. Hoben died in January 1913. Like millions of the men and women of his race, Mr. Hoben left sorely depressed Erin which always had a warm place in his heart's affections, and came to our great republic, the land of the free and the home of the brave, to enjoy the privileges, the opportunities and the material comforts that were denied him in the country of his birth. He was economical and thrifty and he provided carefully and successfully for the needs of his wife and family. He led a good life, was esteemed by his neighbors and friends, discharged conscientiously and faithfully his duties as a citizen and upheld with patriotic ferver the honor of his state and country. He was warm hearted, friendly and hospitable, and his associates of pioneer days always took an earnest interest in his health, his happiness and his welfare. He learned early in life his duties to religion and he always sought divine assistance when temptations and severe trials came to him. He lived to a ripe old age. His death will be widely and sincerely mourned. The sons and daughters have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
